Appearance grades use letters a through d with a being the highest grade.
The two most common patterns for lap siding are going to be shiplap with a center match pattern or channel rustic.

Allow a 1 8 inch expansion gap between pieces if the siding is air or kiln dried.
The face side is saw textured.
